About Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival  

  • The Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival is Constitution Hill’s signature youth festival which affords young people an opportunity to learn and be inspired, share skills and nurture talent, network and collaborate, and create and monetize whilst driving important conversations affecting the creative sector.

Purpose of the Competition 

  • In 2024, South Africa celebrates 30 years of democracy – a milestone filled with hope, disappointment, progress, and setbacks. While looking back it is important to understand the present, we would like creatives to consciously imagine South Africa in 30 years. What does our future look like? How do you see life for future generations? 
  • For a competitive edge, we recommend that artists draw inspiration from or use the Preamble of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 as a source of material.  
  • The artists are also advised to research the work of Constitution Hill and of We the People South Africa to understand the orientation of the artwork expected.  
  • The artists are challenged to design a piece of artwork that they will paint on a mural in the Women’s Jail at Constitution Hill, outside the offices of We the People South Africa.

Timelines  

  • Artists will be required to submit their artwork from 20 May – 21 June 2024.  
  • The adjudication process will occur on 24 – 25 June 2025, consisting of representatives from Constitution Hill, We the People, and an independent expert. 
  • The top three finalists will be invited to the Basha Uhuru Festival and a winner will be announced between 27 -29 June.

Prizes:  

Prizes for the finalists include complimentary tickets to the Basha Uhuru Festival, food vouchers, a Hamper filled with We the People SA merch and other goodies, and a cash prize for the winner.
